Great Victory Day
Description:
About sixty thousand residents of Abkhazia fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War in the period from 1941 to 1945. Seventeen and a half thousand of them died.
More than eight and a half thousand residents of Abkhazia were awarded medals for the defense of the Caucasus. Twenty-two natives of Abkhazia became heroes of the Soviet Union and three - full knights of the Order of Glory.
Today in Abkhazia, as in Russia, there is a glorious tradition dedicated to the Great Victory Day. During the celebration of the next anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War, not only Abkhazian veterans, but also young people tie St. George ribbons - a symbol of the connection of generations and the memory of the Great Victory.
