Karst Caves of the Arabian Mountain Massif
Arabika Massif, Gagra, Abkhazia
Description:
On the territory of Abkhazia, 15 kilometers from Lake Big Ritsa, the world-famous Arabian mountain range stretches. The largest massif in the Western Caucasus. In it over time and under the influence of groundwater formed a huge number of caves of various sizes (more than a hundred). Passing the caves will require climbing training and special equipment, but their beauty and uniqueness are worth it.
Krubera-Voronja Cave
It is located near the Russian-Abkhaz border in the mountains of the Gagra Range. It is the deepest (speleologists were able to descend to a depth of 2197 m) and a long cave in the massif (about 16 km) with a relatively high entrance (about 2.5 m). It is a string of wells, connected by amazing galleries and wriggling transitions. Having descended to 1710 m, the traveler will get into the spacious "Hall of Soviet Speleologists" with its stunning beauty of the lake. This cave is considered the source of the shortest in the world and one of the coldest rivers of the Caucasus, called Reprua.
How do you get to Crubera Crowney?
We go to Sochi (or Gagra). In the latter case, time is lost when passing border control. We hire vehicles to the village of Bagnari. Then on foot we begin to climb the mountain range.
Directly in the cave can be accessed only as part of the research expedition, held several times a year.
