Description:
The picturesque Abkhazian resort town of Gagra, impressive for its beauty, clean mountain air and gentle sea, is also famous for its monuments. One of them is evidence of the tragic events that occurred in the nineties of the twentieth century. We are talking about the Independence Memorial, a monument to the victory in the Abkhazian-Georgian war. Thousands of Georgians and Abkhazians were killed. The war ended with Abkhazia gaining independence.
Very laconic and, at the same time, a majestic monument, erected at the expense of patrons and local authorities, is four columns, which are united at the top by a sphere of gold color. At the foot of the thirty-meter obelisk are carved the names of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of Abkhazia. There's always a sea of live flowers. Relatives of the dead, tourists, vacationers come to this picturesque place to honor the memory of the soldiers. In the evenings, the alley leading to the monument is very beautifully illuminated by decorative lanterns.
The memorial is located near the embankment, in the central part of the city. It can be reached by any means of transport following the city cemetery.
