Gagra

Cave of Saint Hypatia

Gagra, Abkhazia

Description:

One of the world-famous sights of Abkhazia is a cave carved by human hands and named in honor of Bishop Hypatius. According to legend, this is the Bishop’s home. It was in the cave that he lived. Its location is in Gagra, near the temple of the same name, on the slope of the mountain.

Outside, the appearance of the cave is no different from other caves. But inside you can see an unimaginable and amazing room. It is divided into three different rooms, each of which is unique in its own way. Basically differences in size, that is, different height and width. There used to be more rooms to visit, but unfortunately they were covered with earth. If you look at the opposite side of the entrance, you can see a river called Tsicherva.

Many people agree on the location of the cave. Some say it is on the side of the mountain, others say in the gorge of the river. Today, this cave is very popular among tourists, so it is under the protection of the republic.
