Jwawa-Kwara River
Description:
Zhvava-Kvara, Zhovs-Kvara, Joekvara, Joekvara – all these names refer to the same mountain river flowing in Abkhazia. The length of its channel is about twenty kilometers. The path of Zhvava - Kvara, to the place of its confluence into the Black Sea near the city of Gagra, passes by a bright gorge through the Gagra ridge.
The name of the river sounds unusual for perception, but it is translated from the Abkhaz language quite simply and clearly - "twelve springs".
A walk along the banks of the river resembles a trip to a fairy tale, where you can walk on a carpet lined with moss, surrounded by boxwood and chestnut, where among the pristine and mysterious plants you can see old ruins shrouded in mystery. Tour guides are sure to lead tourists to the famous linden, a tree that is about five hundred years old. Inside this linden can fit a fair number of people at the same time.
Excursions along the gorge can be both walking and horseback. However, people unprepared and unadapted to the conditions of such a natural environment, do not forget about the danger and in any case do not go on independent travel.
The area of the valley of this river is not only a natural monument, but also closely connected with the history of Abkhazia. These are various attacks and ruins by foreign invaders in ancient times, and the secrets of the construction of buildings and watchtowers, and the history of the worst flood of the twentieth century, the victims of which were almost the entire indigenous population, and the presence of camps for German prisoners of war after World War II, and the bloody page of the shooting of civilians in the nineties of the last century.
In order to get to the Joekvar gorge, it is enough to come to Abkhazia and get to the city of Gagra, where you can use the services of excursion bureaus and book an excursion.
