Lake Adueda

Kodori Ridge, Lake Adueda, Abkhazia

Description:

One of the main historical monuments of Abkhazia is considered to be a male monastery, located near Mount Athos, and was once the center of the spiritual life of the peoples of the Caucasus. The construction of the monastery began in 1876. The choice of the place was not accidental, because nearby there is a temple in which the holy relics of Simon Cananite are stored, and a little further - a cave where, according to legend, the apostle stayed and prayed.

The monastery was completed in 1896, after which it began to light. In 1924 the monastery was closed by the Bolsheviks. The revival of the New Athos Monastery takes place in 1994. Currently, worship services are held in the temple, frescoes are restored.

Getting to the temple is easy, it stands at the foot of the mountain, and is clearly visible from almost anywhere in the city of New Athos. A hiking trail stretches to the monastery, you can also climb from the waterfall or from the Intercession Church.
