Bzyb river valley
Description:
The valley of the Bzyb River is located at the foot of the Main Caucasian Range. The Bzyb River itself, which forms this valley, is the first, by length, river of Abkhazia. It begins on the slopes of the Adange Pass, and flowing into the Black Sea at Cape Pitsunda, plays a large role in the "construction" of the cape itself, since its rapid waters carry a large amount of debris material.
The Bzyb River is uneven. If in the upper part of its valley was treated by a glacier descending here, then it was locked in a narrow rocky gorge - the Upper Bzyb Canyon, 952 meters long. At the beginning of the path, the current is rapid, and then the valley gradually expands and the river calms down. Below Aguripsta, the Bzybi channel enters the Lower Canyon, which lasts 35 kilometers. Especially grandiose is the Lower Canyon in the area of Mount Abats, where the walls of the gorge are almost sheer, and its total depth reaches 2000 m. After the merger with Gega, Bzyb flows in a spacious channel to the sea.
Hard-to-reach sections of the Upper and Lower Bzybi canyons are known to tourists only as a road to the Ritsa, Pskhu and the upper reaches of the valley. The simplest, hiking paths to the valley, the so-called "shepherd paths", go through the passes: Himsa, Gvashthwa, Adange. On the slopes grow beech-fir forests, untouched by felling, and also here you can find mineral springs.
