Beslet Bridge
7 km northeast of Sukhum, Abkhazia
Description:
One of the most beautiful and oldest attractions of Abkhazia today is the Besletsky Bridge or, as it is also called, the Queen Tamar Bridge. Built about 800 years ago, it still retains not only a beautiful appearance, if you do not take into account the fact that it overgrown with moss and blackened from dampness, but still serves its intended purpose, withstanding loads of up to 8 tons.
The bridge is located on the mountain river Besletka (Basla), in the northeast of the city of Sukhum.
The very design of the bridge is simple - a stone arc at a height of 9 meters above the water, but its fortress and quality of construction should be judged from the thickness - about 80 cm, as well as the width - 4.7 meters. If we take into account that its total length is about 35 meters and it is folded with solid stone slabs, then immediately there is a desire to walk through it to make sure of the reliability of the mail of a thousand-year-old structure.
There is a legend that the bridge was created overnight by Abkhaz soldiers who fought for the freedom of the city, but in reality its construction took from 3 to 5 years. This place is the only attraction of medieval Georgia, so it is worth seeing with your own eyes.
