Sukhumi
Description:
Sukhum Mountain is a forked summit towering above the city of Sukhum at an altitude of 201 meters at sea level. On one of the peaks there is a restaurant, and the other is occupied by the main transmitter of the Abkhazian television - Sukhum TV Tower. Also there is an observation gazebo, which offers a magnificent view of the capital of Abkhazia. The mountain has another purpose – it is the National Pantheon of outstanding figures of Abkhazia. Many prominent representatives of the Abkhaz people are buried on its slopes.
In the middle of the XIX century, when the construction of the city was in full swing, almost the entire forest was cut down on the mountain. The mountain was completely bald, without a single large tree. Sukhumskaya mountain is also known as "Chernyavsky mountain", after the name of a local historian who in 1872 built a dacha on its slope. And in 1914, a private sanatorium "Azra" was built on the mountain slope, which now houses the Akhmad Kujb Research Center for Resortology and Alternative Medicine.
The years from 1949 to 1951 were a period of restoration of vegetation on the slopes of the mountain. There was a large park, on the territory of which more than 100 thousand seedlings of ornamental plants were planted. Currently, the forested slopes of the Sukhum Mountain are a favorite resting place for local residents and guests of the Abkhaz capital. There is an asphalted road to the top of the mountain.
