Sukhumi fortress Dioskuria
ooh Voronova, Sukhum, Abkhazia
Description:
The Sukhum Fortress of Dioscuria was once a military fort that served first for Russian soldiers and then for Turkish soldiers as a defensive garrison. Accordingly, the name of the fortress changed, for example, during the Turkish defense, the Sukhum fortress was renamed Sukhum-Kala.
It is worth noting that with the arrival of new owners, the fortress became more and more massive. The thickness of the stone walls reached two meters, and the elastic frame of the building, built with the help of logs, retained the strength of the walls, despite the fact that after a while the logs turned into dust, leaving gaping holes in the fortress. Also on the territory of the fortress were houses for military families, churches, a decorative fountain of marble. Despite the massiveness of the building, it was destroyed almost to the ground during the Russian-Turkish war. All the buildings were looted and destroyed, the marble fountain was taken out by the Turks.
The fortress came to a depressing state, it was already unsuitable for a defensive military fort, so the stone walls were used as a local prison, where prisoners were in unsanitary conditions. The camera of the famous revolutionary S. Ordzhonikidze has survived to this day. The seaside desert with medieval ruins is today a public landmark of the city.
