Bagrata Castle
Northeastern part of Sukhum, Abkhazia
Description:
In the north-eastern part of the city of Sukhum is Bagrata Castle. It is not difficult to find, as the ancient ruins are located on a mountain, not far from the sea - 500 meters away.
Bagrat III, the famous king of Abkhazia, after whom this once majestic castle was named. In our time, you can see only a small part of what he feared the conquerors and surprised the locals. Today there are only powerful walls, up to 8 meters high and 1.8 meters wide, and the ruins of a glorious castle overgrown with moss and shrubs.
The built fortress originally had an oval shape and two entrances - in the East and in the West, which were strengthened by two towers. At the beginning of the twentieth century, as a result of excavations, scientists found glass jewelry, household items, animal bones, preserved from the XII-XIII centuries. Today, the main value of Bagrat Castle for adventurers is the opportunity to admire the beautiful views of the surroundings of the city of Sukhum.
