Lakes Bande Amir

Kabul, Afghanistan

Description:

Lake Bande Amir is one of the most beautiful lakes in Afghanistan, formed by a chain of six turquoise lakes. They are located at an altitude of 3,000 meters in the Hindu Kush mountains. Lakes are separated by rocks of lime tuff. The water enriched with carbon dioxide has a characteristic bright blue color. Afghan authorities wanted to make the lakes a national landmark in 1960, but political instability prevented this.

In 1970, the lakes were very popular among tourists, but due to the invasion of troops into the country, visiting the lakes stopped. In 2004, the government applied for the inclusion of Bande Amir Lakes on the World Heritage List. In 2009, it was announced the creation of one of the first national parks in Afghanistan on the territory of these lakes.
