Helmand River

Lashkargah, Afghanistan

Description:

The Helmand River is one of the most beautiful rivers in Afghanistan that flows through the Iranian Plateau. The approximate length of the river is 1,150 kilometers, and the area of its basin is 5,000,000 square kilometers. The source of the river flows into Lake Hamun, located in Iran. The lake forms a swampy delta, which is subject to displacement. The main tributary of the Helmand River is the Argandab River.

Basically, the river is filled with snow and melting glaciers. Most often, the water is replenished in spring-summer floods, and sometimes as a result of winter warming. The average annual water consumption for irrigation is 400-500 cubic meters, and in the flood season it reaches 1.500-2.000 square meters. The maximum volume of water can reach 15.000 square meters. The lower course of the river irrigates a small strip of land in the Dashti Margo desert.
