Kabul

Kunar River

Jalalabad, Afghanistan

Description:

The Kunar River is one of the most beautiful and mysterious rivers in Afghanistan. It begins in northeastern Pakistan and ends only in eastern Afghanistan. The Kunar River is the left tributary of the large Kabul River. The Kunar River was formed as a result of the merger of the Biteripari and Putkuh rivers. The entire length of the river is 480 kilometers. It is one of several rivers that flows through mountain ranges reaching an altitude of about 700 meters.

The main food of the river is the melting of snow and glaciers at the tops of the mountains, so in summer the river dries up in places. Near the river are the cities of Asadabad and Chitral. A small section of the river, located in the upper reaches, serves as the state border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The waters of the Kunar River are also used to irrigate nearby lands.
