Bamiyan Airport
Description:
Bamiyan is a small Afghan airport located in the central part of the country and serving the city of the same name. Bamiyan is considered one of the highest mountain airports in the world.
Bamiyan Airport has a unique location - it is built on a high plateau that rises above sea level for more than two and a half kilometers. Due to the rarefied air and difficult meteorological conditions, Bamiyan is able to accept only the lightest aircraft, which do not require a long runway to disperse. The local GDP is only 2000 meters long, and its surface is a rammed mixture of fine gravel and soil. In addition to aircraft, Bamiyan also operates helicopters from a nearby U.S. military base.
Bamiyan is of exceptional strategic importance, so it is heavily guarded. However, despite the significant presence of NATO troops at the airport, Bamiyan still serves civilian flights. In addition, the airport is often used by various humanitarian organizations to deliver their cargo.
