Muradie Mosque

Vlora, Albania 5.7 mS

Description:

Muradie Mosque (Albania Vlora) is one of the oldest sights of Albania, which is a sample of architecture of the Byzantine period. It is located on the territory of the modern city of Vlora, in the region of Elbasan.

The mosque dates from the VI-VII century and is one of the oldest in the country. Built over a fraternal tomb, it serves as a Muslim and Christian temple. Muradie Mosque is currently used as the main church for Catholic worship.

The mosque is located directly above the tomb of the holy martyr Muradia (in the Christian tradition - Mura), who was the first wife of the pagan Atanarich. Her relics became one of the main shrines of Christianity in Albania, as they are considered one of the great Christian saints. But as soon as Athanarich decided to convert to Christianity and marry her, he immediately ordered her to be executed.

The town of Vlora and the mosque itself can be reached from Split within an hour by car or bus. However, it is best to book tickets in advance.

Split Airport also has a parking lot for cars, but if you decide to travel by public city or intercity bus, you will have to travel in two to three hours through the city to the bus station, from where buses depart to Vlora. From the bus station to the mosque can be reached in 15 minutes.
