Rruga Perlat Rexhepi, Vlora, Albania
About the company:
The Independence Museum is one of the main attractions of the city of Vlora, located in the southwest of Albania. For many centuries, this city has had great historical significance, and its history is full of bright events. Of course, tourists who come here will have something to see.
The oldest monuments in Vlore belong to the period of antiquity and date back to the VI century BC. Two centuries later, the city is often mentioned in historical sources as an important port for ships sailing from Otranto and Brindisi. In addition, Vlora was an intermediate point between the ancient cities of Butrint and Apolonia.
In 1481, the city was recaptured from the Turks by the troops of the Greek military commander Crocodilos Cladas, who was supported by local rebels. Since the commander was in Neapolitan service, Vlora was under the control of the Kingdom of Naples for ten years.
Another bright stage in the history of Albania of the twentieth century is also associated with Vlora, where the country's independence was proclaimed, and the city became the first capital of sovereign Albania. Between 1955 and 1962, the Warsaw Pact used the port of Vlora as a naval base. You will learn about all this and many other events in the local historical museum.
