Oran

Fort Santa Cruz

Oran, Algeria

Description:

Fort Santa Cruz is one of the main attractions of Orana, Algeria. Originally in its place was an old church, built in 1505, which was soon destroyed by the British. In 1610, a fort was built here, which still pleases the eye of visiting tourists and local residents.

At its foot is a small chapel that was built during a cholera epidemic in 1847 by the Bishop of Oran. Fort Santa Cruz is a closed fortification, which in ancient times was an integral part of the outer line of defense structures, which contained a military garrison that protected the central part of the city. The structure is made of durable stone, and the width of its walls reaches 2 meters. About 2,000 people were involved in the construction of the fort.

Nowadays, this place attracts thousands of tourists who want to admire medieval architecture, as well as go on excursions inside the Fort of Santa Cruz. They are held every day except Saturday and Sunday. The ticket price is $10.
