Tlemsen Grand Mosque
Rue commandant Djaber, Tlemsen, Algeria
Description:
The Grand Mosque of Tlemcen is a well-preserved architectural monument of the Almovarian period, one of the oldest mosques in Algeria. Built in the XI century, the building became the main mosque of the city and its city-forming part.
The building of the mosque is built in the shape of a pentagon with sides 50 by 60 meters and consists of two parts - a prayer house and a minaret. The exterior and interior decoration of the premises is a vivid example of Muslim architecture - the walls, ceilings and dome of the mihrab are decorated with skillful carvings, patterns and beautiful plaster.
Especially often in the interior decoration there are arches - in large quantities they decorate almost all rooms, including the courtyard and portico of the mosque. Innovative architectural solutions used in the Tlemsen Mosque can be seen in other famous buildings of the period.
