The Grand Mosque
Description:
The Grand Mosque of Algeria is one of the best examples of Almoravid architecture, which is well preserved to our time. It is one of the oldest mosques in the country. In her plan lies the wrong pentagon with dimensions of about 50 by 60 meters, consisting of two main sections.
The prayer hall of the mosque is a large rectangle with thirteen parallel passages located perpendicular to the wall – this is quite characteristic of Africa T-shaped plan. The passages are crowned by amazing arches topped by intersecting transverse arcades in order to visually establish the spatial hierarchy.
The dome of the mosque is built of bricks laid with a rib in such a way that a magnificent pattern in the shape of a star is formed. The space between the ribs was filled with colorful plaster with various plant decoration. This innovation is widely used in many mosques in Morocco and Algeria.
