Church of San Juan de Caselles

Andorra, Canillo, Ctra. general 2

Description:

The church of San Juan de Caselles is located in Andorra, a small state in the Pyrenees. It is located near the town of Canillo, on the way to France.

Documented data on the church of the early Middle Ages have not survived to this day, but there are documents confirming the existence of the city of Canillo in the early second half of the XII century.

Direct evidence of the existence of the church in the Middle Ages is the mention of a visit to the church of the archbishop, in 1312. The brick walls of the church are crowned by a gable roof. A bell tower in the form of a quadrangular tower is attached to the church. The tower has windows located on three levels. In the beginning, the bell tower stood separately from the church, and the transition from the church to the bell tower was completed later. In the interior decoration of the church preserved medieval frescoes dating from the twelfth century. The frescoes depict plots on biblical themes.
