Church of San Martin de la Cortinada
Description:
The church of San Martin de la Cortinada is located north of the town of Ordino, in Andorra. The building of the Catholic Church has undergone various transformations and expansions over time, as a result of which the church has slightly increased on the north side. The main part of the church has an almost square base. As a result of successive transformations, the church building was reoriented.
A bell tower is attached to the building, the last two floors of which have window openings. Modern visitors to this unique monument of medieval architecture see the rich interior decoration of the church. Restoration of the church and restoration of the state of its wall paintings began in 1968. According to the results of spectral analysis, the painting of the inner space of the church was dated to the end of the twelfth century. In addition to traditional biblical motifs, there are images of fantastic creatures on the frescoes.
In addition to medieval relics, the church contains later elements. For example, it is an altar in the Baroque style of the eighteenth century and wooden furniture dating from the seventeenth century. The side chapels of the church and the main altar are protected by wrought-iron gates, which today are of great historical and artistic value.
