Santa Coloma Church
Description:
Santa Coloma is a church located in the small village of Santa Coloma. It was built in the Doromanesque style and today is one of the most famous oldest architectural structures of Andorra. From the outside, it looks quite ascetic, with minimal decor elements. The church is more like a small fortress than a holy abode, like all architectural structures of that era. To its side is a magnificent four-storey bell tower.
The church is surrounded by a low stone fence with a gate made in the form of an arch. To the temple there is a cobbled path that runs through a cozy courtyard dotted with green grass lawn. The approximate time of the foundation of the temple dates back to the X century, as indicated by the naves and apses, which are laid in the construction of the building. In the XII century, the walls of the building were decorated with Mozarabian frescoes (painting on raw plaster), the remains of which are still here.
The Church of Santa Coloma contains the oldest wooden sculptures and icons of the XII century with the image of the Mother of God of Mercy. Also here is a wooden altar dating from the XVIII century, which is made in the Baroque style polychrome method.
