Buenos Aires

Jewish Buenos Aires

Description:

There are about 300,000 Jews in Argentina. Most of them are in Buenos Aires and its suburbs. It is the largest Jewish community in Latin America and the seventh largest in the world. During the tour, I will tell you when and why thousands of families from Eastern Europe decided to move to Argentina, who helped them, what awaited them in their new place and why they became known as “Jewish Gauchos”.

You will see the oldest synagogue in Buenos Aires on Libertad Street and learn who was part of the community in the first half of the XX century. Who was her pride, like the writer Alberto Gerchunoff, and vice versa - as a criminal gang Zwi Migdal. I will tell you how Argentine Jews lived and fought during and after World War II, when the national government sympathized with and later harbored Nazi criminals.

We will visit the memorial to the victims of the explosion in the Argentine-Israeli Association - the largest terrorist attack in the history of the country and walk through the most Jewish district of Buenos Aires - Onse, where one of the most famous and successful modern Argentine directors - Daniel Burman - was born, grew up and makes his films.
