Buenos Aires

Insta-tour. La Boca and San Telmo. History, language, food. Two souls of the city

Description:

Six hours, two neighborhoods, and two completely different Buenos Aires. This walk is built not as a list of attractions, but as a small story of the city, told in the first person: from the port outskirts, where it all began, to the bohemian quarter, where tango still lives.

We start in La Boca, by the bridge over Riachuelo. Here once settled Genoese immigrants, who built houses from shipwrecks and beautiful them with the remains of ship paint - so the area acquired its famous color. Then we go along Garibaldi Street, which is more like an open-air gallery: frescoes and sculptures tell about the docks, firefighters and women of the quarter. Along the way, there is a gastronomic pause with Choripan, the Argentine street food, without which the local culture cannot be understood.

In Kaminito, we will understand where art ends and tourist kitsch begins, and how the artist Benito Kinkela Martin in the 1950s saved the area from demolition, turning it into an art installation. Find angles from which you get shots without a crowd in the lens. Let’s finish the first part at La Bombonera – let’s talk about why football in Argentina is more than sports, and why Boca Juniors have blue and yellow colors.

Next is a short taxi ride (it is already on), and the second half begins. In San Telmo, we go up to the Lesama Park, which overlooks the roofs of the district and the distant La Boca. Passover Defensa - a former aristocratic mansion that survived the epidemic of 1871 and turned first into a communal apartment for immigrants, and today in a flea market. In Plaza Dorrego, the oldest square in the city after Plaza de Mayo, we drink coffee in a historic bar and watch the square live its own life. The final chord is the tango quarter: Viejo Almasen, murals with Carlos Gardel and bronze Mafalda, with which you must take a photo. We end at the market of San Telmo in 1897 – under the openwork glass roof you can breathe out, buy souvenirs and realize what a historical distance you just walked.

Along the route, we learn the local words - lunfardo, che, boludo, birra, quilombo - and train to order coffee the way porteños do. The tour is in any weather: in the rain, some points are transferred to bars, passages and museums. The groups are small, between two and six people, so it almost always turns out to be a private walk. The format is suitable for those who are in the city for the first time, and those who have already seen the postcard Buenos Aires and want to dig deeper.
