Russian Orthodox Church in San Telmo
Brasil 315, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Description:
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Catedral Sant sima Trinidad) is the first Orthodox church in South America, and the only one of its kind in Buenos Aires. The cathedral is located in the historical center of the city. Consecrated and officially opened to parishioners in 1901, but the first mention of it dates back to 1887.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral is distinguished by its architecture, which stands out strongly against the background of the typical houses of the San Telmo district. The temple was built in the style of Russian Orthodox churches of the seventeenth century, and the decoration of the ornament and the painting of the domes was done by the Italian painter Matteo Casella.
The building of the cathedral consists of two floors. On the first there is a parish school, and on the second floor, in fact, the temple itself, where services are held.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral has a small collection of ancient icons and particles of relics of Christian saints.
A separate bait for tourists is the porcelain iconostasis, made in 1900 by the architect Nikonov.
