El Calafate

Valichu Caves

The caves are 8 kilometers from El Calafate

Description:

The Walichu Caves are an important tourist and archaeological site in Argentina. There are many cave paintings of the Paleolithic period.

The caves are located just 8 kilometers from the city of El Calafet. The caves can be reached on foot, by car or by horse.

In the caves you can see drawings of Aboriginal people who are 4000 years old. The drawings were discovered by Francis Moreno in 1877. They were created using materials such as plaster, egg whites, plant resin and human saliva. They were applied to the rocks for help and clues to other hunters. Some drawings have been restored so that visitors can see them in full.
