Valdez Peninsula

The peninsula is located on the Atlantic coast in the northeastern part of Chubut province

Description:

Valdez is a peninsula on the Atlantic coast of Argentina. The area of the peninsula is 3625 square kilometers. Most of the peninsula is uninhabited. There are several salt lakes, the largest of which lies 40 meters below sea level.

This is the lowest mark on land for South America. The main settlement of the peninsula is the village of Puerto Pyramides. On the territory of the peninsula and in the surrounding waters live the most colorful representatives of the fauna of the region. Here you can see elephant seals, killer whales, guanacos, sea lions, battleships, as well as unique Komerson dolphins that live exclusively in these places. The peninsula is separated from the mainland by two bays. On one of them, on the mainland side, is the first reserve of Chubut province, called Punta Loma. It is home to the only on the continent, a permanent colony of sea lions. On the Valdés Peninsula, you can also find the period when penguins arrive here. A huge number of Magellanic penguins swim here to breed chicks and prepare for their migration. In 1979, the Punta Tombo penguin colony was granted provincial reserve status.
