Chiang Mai: Night Markets, Elephants and Temples – What to See and Try
We reached Chiang Mai by bus Greenbus X121 from Chiang Rai. For 169 baht per person, it was a simple and convenient trip.
However, then we had to walk 3 km to our hotel, Thapae Garden Guest House, under the scorching sun. But the air conditioning was waiting for us and a room that seemed like a real paradise.
For most travelers, Chiang Mai is the beginning of exploring Thailand. It was our last stop before leaving Asia. And to be honest, we regretted not coming here sooner. The city has changed a lot over the past 25 years - it has become more western, comfortable and easy for tourists.
Where to stay in Chiang Mai?
The city has a lot of accommodation options – from luxury hotels to budget guest houses. Here are our favorites:
The Inside House (SHA Extra Plus) is a luxury hotel in the old town. Here you will find a continental and buffet for breakfast, air conditioning, sound insulation and even hot springs in the garden.
Phra Singh Village (SHA Extra Plus) is a mid-range hotel with a swimming pool, Netflix and comfortable rooms. Book in advance, because places are bought up quickly.
De Lanna Hotel (SHA Extra Plus) is a budget option with balconies, robes and a minibar. Ideal for those who want to save, but not lose in comfort.
What to see and try in Chiang Mai?
Our main experiences are night markets and food. We especially recommend trying sour pork sausages at the southern gate of the city. Order them with a cold Chang beer and you will understand what real Thai taste is.
Khao Soi is Chiang Mai’s signature dish. It's a coconut curry with meat, crispy vegetables and fried onions. You're gonna make your fingers look good!
Do not forget about the dessert - Khanom Krok, small cakes made of rice flour and coconut milk.
Night markets in Chiang Mai are a different story. We often chose the area near the south gate, where the choice of dishes was simply huge. And if you want more souvenirs and atmosphere, head to the Saturday Walking Market. However, be prepared for the crowds - after 20:00 there is a real anthill.
Chiang Mai Temples
There are no temples in Chiang Mai. We managed to visit Wat Chedi Luang, which began to be built in the XIV century. The Emerald Buddha was once kept here until an earthquake in 1545 destroyed part of the structure.
If you want to learn more about the temples of Chiang Mai, we advise you to take a local guide - he will tell stories and legends that will make your acquaintance with the city even more interesting.
Before leaving, we had time to enjoy another portion of sour sausages, Khao soy and fresh watermelon juice. The second-class train to Bangkok is a classic experience for those traveling in Thailand.
Tips for travelers:
1. Do not forget about insurance – it will cover medical expenses, theft and luggage delay.
2. Buy eSIM for the Internet – it is convenient and economical.
3. Use a VPN to surf the network safely.
4. Book a transfer from the airport in advance to avoid unnecessary hassle.
Chiang Mai is a city worth seeing with your own eyes. Here everyone will find something of their own: from delicious street food to ancient temples and meetings with good elephants. Plan your route in advance and your trip will be unforgettable!
