Fulidhu – Shark and Stingray Beach: A Budget Guide to the Maldives
We recently visited the small local island of Fulidhu. Maldives - nearby also came to the island of Dhigurah, which is remembered for its beaches and sandy spit. Fulidhu is a great option for those who want to enjoy the tropics without crazy spending: white sand, clear water and family hotels.
The main feature of the island is a beach with sharks and stingrays: in shallow water you can see katrans (nurse sharks), sea turtles and stingrays, and with luck - even take a picture next to them.
In addition, diving classes and ordinary beach holidays are available on the island.
Tip: with a local guide, such meetings become safer and more interesting - the guide will tell you the best places and times, tell you about the behavior of animals and help you get successful shots.

How long to stay and useful advice
Where to stay
Small family guesthouses and mini-hotels are the main characteristic of Fulidhu. Options include Huvan Inn, Island Break, Kinan Retreat, Rushkokaa Villa. Prices start at about $60 per night – convenient for independent travelers.
How to get to Fulidhu
The nearest airport is Male International Airport (MLE). It is about 55 kilometers (35 miles) from Fulidhu. From Male to the island there are speedboats and ferries.
Speedboat (public speedboat)
The main way to get there is by public speedboat (we did).
Travel time is slightly less than 1.5 hours, costing about $40 per person one way.
In our experience, the sea was undulating in places, so the trip may not be the most calm - it depends on the weather.
Pros: modern boats, comfortable seats, toilet, luggage space and free water.
Schedule: waste from Male to Fulidhu at 10:00 and 16:00 (on Fridays – only at 9:30). Back from Fulidhu to Male - at 7:30 and 13:30 (on Fridays - at 7:00).
Attention: different companies work on the route, the schedule sometimes changes - be sure to check the current time at your hotel. The hotel can usually book tickets for you - pay conveniently when checking in on the bill, so you will not carry a lot of cash.
Private speedboat
If you are traveling in a group of 4-5 people and want a direct transfer, you can rent a private boat. It is more expensive, but often more convenient - booked through a hotel.
Public ferry
Cheap, but slow alternative: the ferry lasts about 4 hours, the price is about $5 USD one way.
- Departures from Male to Fulidhu - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 10:00. Back from Fulidhu to Male on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:30.
The ferry departs from the Hulhumale pier in the town of Male (important: it is a pier in Malé with the same name, and not a pier on the island of Hulhumale). From the airport to the pier - about 10 minutes by taxi.
Tickets cannot be purchased in advance, so arrive early to get a seat.
Shark and stingray beach
The main spectacle is the shallow water, where stingrays, quatrans and sometimes turtles gather. Local guides know the habits of animals and safe rules of behavior – with their help you will see more and avoid mistakes when shooting. Respect for wildlife: Do not touch the animals and listen to the instructor.
There's more to do.
- Diving and snorkeling around reefs.
Walks on the island: Fulidhu is easy to navigate on foot, you can rent a bicycle.
- Trip to neighboring islands and sandy spit (such as Dhigurah) - if you want to see a long sand spit, plan a separate excursion.
Acquaintance with local life: communities with traditions live on the islands - a tour with a local guide will add context and make the encounter with culture more meaningful.
How long to stay
For exploring the island and the main activities, 2-3 nights are usually enough; if you plan to dive or want a calm beach holiday, it is better to stay longer.
Useful advice
Always check the hotel’s current boat schedule – it changes sometimes.
For ferry take cash; speedboat can often be paid through the hotel with a card.
If you are prone to seasickness, take your pills in advance.
Observe local rules: more modest clothing is expected on populated local islands (outside tourist beaches).
For a safe and rich experience, consider a local guide: he will help organize meetings with marine fauna, show the best places for snorkeling and talk about local life.
This is a short guide before a trip to Fulidha.
