The ideal route in Helsinki for 2 days: how to do everything and not get tired
When we first started planning a trip to Helsinki, we had a list of attractions for a whole week. But time, as always, is in short supply, and we had to shorten the program to have time to see other amazing places of our Scandinavian trip.
As a result, we have only 2 days left in the capital of Finland, and we decided to make the most of them. By the way, we arrived in June when the days are long and the nights are almost non-existent, allowing us to walk longer and see more. If you also want to have time for all the interesting things, here is our proven route for 2 days.
1. Helsinki tour
To experience the city’s atmosphere, start with a walking tour of Helsinki with a local guide. This is the best way to learn the history, legends and secrets of the capital. Be sure to include in the program a visit to the fortress of Suomenlinna - this is one of the main attractions of the city.
Practical tips for travel
This route is ideal for two days in Helsinki in the summer. In winter, the city looks very different, but it is also worth seeing. To make the most of your time, plan your route in advance and book excursions.
How to get to Helsinki
Most travelers fly to Helsinki Airport, but there are other options: ferries from Stockholm and Tallinn or a car if you are traveling in Finland. We came from Turku, the oldest city in the country.
From the airport downtown
The distance from the airport to the center of Helsinki is about 32 km. It will take 30-45 minutes by car. You can rent a car directly at the airport, but I advise you to get to the center first by transfer or train. In Helsinki, a car would rather get in the way than help.
The train from the airport to the center takes about 30 minutes. Tickets can be bought on the HSL website or on the platform machine. There is also a bus number 600 that takes you in 40 minutes.
Ferries in Helsinki
Ferries from Tallinn arrive at the Länsisatama terminal (Western Port) and from Stockholm at the Olympia Terminal. Both terminals are close to the centre and the city can be reached by tram, bus or taxi.
Where to stay in Helsinki for 2 days
With two days in the city, it is better to choose a hotel in the center to save time on the road. I recommend the Scandic Helsinki Hub – excellent location, convenient parking and proximity to transport. In Finland, good hotels buy up quickly, so book in advance.
If you do not find accommodation in the center, look for Forenom Aparthotel or Noli in the district of Hertoniemi. They are close to the railway line, which allows you to quickly reach the center.
How to get around Helsinki
Public transport in Helsinki is excellent: buses, trams, metro and ferries. Tickets are valid for all modes of transport for a certain period of time. Day and multi-day tickets are a great option for tourists.
Most of the time you will be walking. The city center is compact, and walking around it is a real pleasure, especially in good weather.
How to Spend 2 Days in Helsinki
Now that we have figured out the logistics, let’s move on to the most interesting route.
Day 1
1. Breakfast at Story in the Old Market
If your hotel doesn’t offer breakfast, head to Helsinki’s Old Market. Here, in Cafe Story, you will find a huge selection of dishes.
2. Walking tour of Helsinki
This is the best way to get to know the city. Choose a tour with a local guide to learn the history and interesting facts.
3. Senate Square
Start exploring Helsinki from Senate Square. Here you will see the monument to Alexander II, the Helsinki Cathedral and other iconic buildings.
4. Helsinki cathedral
This is one of the most photographed sights of the city. The cathedral is built in the style of neoclassicism and is open to the public.
5. National Library of Finland
The cultural heritage of the country is kept here. The library is part of the University of Helsinki and is open to visitors.
Continuing the route on the second day will be no less exciting!
