How to get from Bangkok to Pax, Laos: itineraries and tips for solo travelers

Journey from Bangkok Pax is an exciting adventure that requires a little planning, but promises a lot of experiences. Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and Paksa, a city in Laos, are separated by the border, but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to get to!

Most travelers travel to Pax to then travel to the famous 4,000 islands of Laos or explore the Bolaven Plateau. We have come this way ourselves to complete our journey in Laos with a visit to the unique Gibbon Experience project near Huaisai.

The easiest way is a VIP bus from Bangkok to Pax. He leaves at 18:00 and arrives the next morning. You don't have to change seats - the bus takes passengers across the border where you pass immigration control and then continue on. This is not a sleeping bus, but the seats are comfortable. If you do not like night trips, there is an alternative: divide the path into three stages - Bangok - Ubon Ratchatani, Ubon Ratchatani - Chongmek (border), and then in Pax.

The first stage: from Bangkok to Ubonratchatani. You can choose the night bus (9.5-11 hours), night train (10-11 hours 20 minutes) or fast flight (1 hour 5 minutes). We chose the train - it is romantic and allows you to enjoy the views from the window.

In Ubonratchatani you need to get from the station to the bus station. You can do this on Songtau No. 2 - it is a local route transport that is easy to find. Tell the driver that you need a bus to Laos and it will take you to the right place.

From Ubonratchatani buses in Pax depart twice a day - at 09:30 and 15:30. The trip takes about three hours and costs 200 baht. Tip: Before leaving, check out the cafe at the bus station - there is a great Pad Thai for only 40 baht!

At the border, you will need to apply for a visa to Laos ($35) and pass passport control. We advise you to prepare a photo in advance and fill out a questionnaire. After crossing the border, the bus will take you to Pax, where you will be greeted by the atmosphere of a cozy Lao city.

If you want to save time or prefer comfort, consider the option with a local guide. They will help with obtaining a visa and tell you how to plan the route better.

Where to stay in Pax? We recommend Le Jardin Hotel - this is a cozy hotel with a swimming pool and a beautiful view of the garden. If you’re looking for a budget option, check out the Intouch Riverside Hotel or Xuanmai Garden Resort on the outskirts of the city.

Traveling from Bangkok to Pax is not just a road, but part of your adventure in Laos. Plan the route, enjoy the views and prepare for new discoveries!
