How to get to Cambodia: a practical guide for independent travelers

When we first passed through CambodiaThe red dirt roads seemed to be part of the adventure - unexpected views awaited us. Today, a lot has changed: new highways, renovated sections and even trains.

But the spirit of the trip is not lost - on many routes there are still narrow uneven roads, minvans with "stops in the middle of nowhere" and a rainy season that can suddenly disrupt everything.

If you like to travel on your own, Cambodia will still be a storm of emotions - just plan a little more flexible than usual.

Important information

All land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia are closed. If you plan to enter Thailand, you will have to fly.
If you are traveling through Thailand, fly to Cambodia. The Phnom Penh (PNH) is usually a better choice – there are more flights and they are more often guaranteed than Siem Reap (REP).

Airports and borders

Cambodia has two international airports, Phnom Penh (PNH) and Siem Reap (REP). There are several major border crossings with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, but not all of them accept foreign tourists.

Important: Visa on arrival is available only at selected border crossing points and costs US$30 – pay in cash in dollars, sometimes adding a “service fee”.

It is more reliable to issue an e-visa through the official website of the government of Cambodia – payment by card is possible, the answer usually comes within 3-4 working days.

Please note: the entry/exit port must be indicated in the visa application and you may not be allowed through another point – the carrier also checks this before departure.

How to move within the country

In Cambodia, you will use a combination of vehicles:
Long-distance crossings: large buses, minivans, sometimes trains and domestic flights.
- In cities and for short routes: tuk-tuks, rims, motorcycles.
Along the rivers and to the islands: boats on the Mekong and sea crossings.

Each mode of transport has its own "chips" - buses are convenient and budget, but flights can be delayed; minivans sometimes recruit passengers almost in a clear field; boats on the river give a chance to see villages and nature that are not visible from the highway.

Booking board

The easiest way to buy tickets in Cambodia - aggregators like 12goAsia: there are collected tickets for planes, trains, buses, private transfers and minivans. This saves time and reduces the hassle during docking.

Practical tips for an independent traveler

Plan your time: Weather surprises and road conditions affect your schedule.
Carry cash in dollars for visa on arrival and small payments.
Get an e-visa in advance, if you can – so you save yourself from risks and queues.
Think about insurance: in case of medical expenses, theft or cancellation of a trip.
Connect to the mobile Internet: eSIM or local SIM card will help you navigate and book transfers on the go.
Electric sockets and voltage may vary – take an adapter.

How useful is the local guide?

If your goal is simply to move between cities, you can do it yourself. But if you want a deeper understanding of places, their history and the intricacies of local life, a local guide will make the trip much more interesting: explain the nuances of routes, show hidden stops and tell stories that you will not find in guidebooks.

I especially recommend a guide for river routes and visits to remote villages – this adds security and meaning to the trip.

Cambodia is a country where modernisation coexists with authenticity. New tracks and trains have made travel easier, but many routes remain "adventure." Fly through Phnom Penh, apply for an e-visa in advance, have cash in dollars and book tickets through proven services. And do not forget that with a local escort, the trip will not only become easier, but also much more interesting.
