How to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh: fast routes, practical life hacks

Ho Chi Minh City – Phnom Penh route is popular with travelers in Southeast Asia: if you do not plan to visit the island of Phu Quoc or explore the Mekong Delta deeper, most often go directly to the capital. Cambodia. Both cities are mandatory destinations in the region, and the choice of transport depends on what is more important to you: speed, comfort or experience.

Where exactly are we going?

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, located at the confluence of the Basak, Sab and Mekong rivers in the central and southern part of the country. It is the largest city on the Mekong. On the roads: Phnom Penh is 320 km from Siem Reap, about 250 km from Ho Chi Minh City and about 700 km from Bangkok.

Basic transport options

Aircraft: The fastest way is a direct flight to Phnom Penh International Airport. Suitable if you want to save time and effort.
Bus: The most convenient and widely used ground option is Giant Ibis. The company offers several flights a day, the bus is usually more comfortable than competitors; the middle of the cabin is considered the most convenient area - immediately book a specific place. Tickets are best bought in advance.
Minibus/van: often faster than larger intercity buses; more convenient for those who prefer smaller groups and flexible schedules.
Boat via Chau Doc: Combined option is to take a bus or van to Chau Doc (Vietnam), and then swim by boat on the Mekong to Phnom Penh. This route is slower but more picturesque - a great choice for those who love river scenery. We went both ways and found it very interesting.

Documents and visas

This is a cross-border route: be sure to carry all the necessary documents to enter Cambodia. Please clarify your visa requirements in advance – the rules may change.

Practical advice

Comfort: If you choose a Giant Ibis bus, book seats in advance; the middle of the cabin is often calmer.
- Van is usually faster, but comfort depends on the operator.
If you want to make the route part of the history of travel, consider a boat across the Mekong: much more spectacular than just moving along the track.
Insurance: Get travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation.
Accommodation: pick up a hotel in advance (water view? laundry? your bathroom?) - this saves time and nerves on arrival.
Electric sockets and power supply: check the compatibility of plugs and voltage.
Communication: An eSIM or local SIM card will help you stay online without any problems.

When to take a guide

If you want to get a deeper understanding of the city and regional history, as well as see the hidden gems – a walk with a local guide will make a trip to Phnom Penh much more interesting. The guide will help decipher local landmarks, explain the history of rivers and neighborhoods, and suggest non-tourist points that you will not find in the guidebook.

How to choose a route

If you don't have much time, fly.
If comfort and reasonable price are important, book Giant Ibis.
If you want a cost-effective and fast ground alternative, look for vans.
If you like atmospheric travel and nature – combine through the Chau Doc and swim along the Mekong.

The choice depends on your priorities: speed, budget or impressions. Book your tickets and seats in advance, check your visas and documents and let the road from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh become one of the highlights of your trip.
