The best route in Chiang Rai: how to do everything in 1, 2 or 3 days
Chiang Rai is a place worth visiting, even if you only have one day. Here you can see the main attractions, and if you have more time – go trekking through the picturesque hills. But let’s be clear: How do you make your trip unforgettable?
Why Chiang Rai?
This city in northern Thailand is famous for its unique temples, tea plantations and the atmosphere of authentic Thailand. Start with the most famous, the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), and then immerse yourself in the local culture and nature. If you want to learn more about each place, we suggest you take a local guide – they will tell stories you won’t find in guidebooks.
How do I get there?
You can come to Chiang Rai by bus from Bangkok or Chiang Mai, or from Laos. Check in advance which bus station you are arriving at - there are two, and they differ depending on the direction.
What to see in one day?
If time is limited, start with the White Temple. This is the main business card of the city. Then head to the Rong Suea Temple, which is equally impressive. Afterwards, return to the city center to taste the local dish, Khao Soi.
Don't forget the Clock Tower - it's especially beautiful in the evening when the light show begins. End the day at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo) and the Hill Tribe Museum, where you will learn about the life of the local tribes.
What to add if you have 2 days?
On the second day, head to the Baan Dam Museum, a unique place where art merges with architecture. Then visit tea plantations like Choui Fong to learn all about the tea culture in Thailand.
End the day in the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge. Here is an opium museum that tells about the difficult history of the region.
What if you have 3 days?
The third day can be devoted to trekking or exploring the surrounding area. For example, go to a national park or visit waterfalls.
Practical advice:
Clothing: Many attractions are temples, so dress modestly (shoulders and knees should be covered).
- Transport: use the Grab app - it is convenient and cheaper than a taxi.
Accommodation: Stay in the center, such as Sleepy House Chiang Rai, to be closer to everything.
Chiang Rai is a city that is worth your time. Even if you only have one day, you will see the most important thing. And if you stay longer, discover more amazing places. Plan your route in advance and your trip will be unforgettable!
