Misul (Indonesia) – the hidden paradise of Raja Ampat: how to get there, rest, where to live, what to see
Misul is one of the most impressive islands of the Raja Ampat archipelago. Due to the remoteness, this place is still almost a secret pearl. Indonesia.
And I spent a week there, and I can tell you, it's got it all -- stunning landscapes, great snorkeling, heart-shaped lagoons, limestone caves, even a lake where mute jellyfish swim without stinginging tentacles. Misul looks like an alien world: vertical cliffs emerging from turquoise water are a sight hard to forget. Most accommodation options are simple, but it is this remoteness and basic level of comfort that keeps the atmosphere calm without crowds.
Below is a short guide: how to get there, what to expect and what to see. A little tip: with a local guide, many places open differently - he knows the secluded coves, the best time for photos and tells stories that are not in the guidebooks.
How to get there
Misul is located in the southern part of Raja Ampat, off the coast of West Papua. There is no direct airport on Misul - the nearest air hub is in Soronga (SOQ code). From Sorong there are direct flights from Bali, Jakarta, Makassar and Manado. I flew Garuda from Bali - about 3 hours in comfort. Tickets are conveniently searched through Skyscanner.
From Soronga Airport to the harbor, about 15 minutes by taxi (the harbor map usually comes from hosts). Taxis are always plentiful and can also be called via Grab or GoJek.
Ferry and boats
- Ferry. The most common way is by night ferry to Misul. It's about 8 hours on schedule, but "Indonesian time" means possible delays of 1 to 4 hours. The comfort of the ferry is basic; for an additional fee, you can rent a private cabin, which allows you to sleep normally. Waves are sometimes rocking, but not frightening.
- Booking and schedule. Your host will usually send you an up-to-date schedule and can book tickets.
Note: they speak Indonesian – you will need an interpreter on the phone.
- Arriving in Misul. Ferries come to Yellu Harbour; from there your guest farm/island will need to be reached by small boat. Most homestays arrange transfers – from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the location.
- Private boats. There are fast private boats (e.g. Misool Eco Resort) - the road from Sorong will be reduced to about 5 hours, but it is more expensive.
- Live-abord. For divers, live boards are popular - 9-12-day cruises starting and ending in Soronga. You live on a boat and explore the islands in circles – a great option if you want to cover many points without constantly moving.
The Best Things to Do on Misul
- Balbulol Lagoon. The most unforgettable place is the Balbulol Lagoon on the eastern edge of the Misul Islands. From homestay in the Yapap area to her about 1.5 hours by boat. Imagine giant vertical cliffs sticking out of turquoise water - a landscape as if from another planet. For a photo shoot and quiet contemplation – the ideal place. With a local guide, you will get to the best coves and shoot shots in the right light.
- Yapap and Balbulol rocks. The Yapap Rocks are another great set of views for boating and snorkeling.
- Snorkeling and diving. In the vicinity a lot of reefs with rich marine life. If you are not a diver, take one-day snorkeling tours – the guide will show you the places where fish are most common.
- Silent jellyfish. There is a lake with jellyfish without stinging tentacles - an unusual experience for a safe swim next to this strange view.
- Heart-shaped caves and lagoons. Explore the limestone caves and curious lagoons – local guides know the small passageways and the best viewpoints.
Accommodation in a homestay (hosting family). Most hosts are simple but warm and welcoming. This gives you an opportunity to get a deeper sense of local life – and to get to know people who know the island like their five fingers.
Little advice and expectations
The comfort is simple: be prepared for the basic conditions, but for the sake of the uniqueness of the place it is worth it.
Plan your time – ferries are often delayed.
Know that it is convenient to get by using the host: they will help with tickets and transfers.
A local guide will add a lot: it will open hidden places, tell you the best time for photos and make the trip richer.
Misul is not about luxury service, but about mountains in the sea, clear water and a sense of secluded paradise. If you are ready for an adventure and a little simple life – this place will give an impression for a lifetime.
