Swimming along the Mekong: how to get from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc (Cambodia → Vietnam) – a simple and romantic route

We have done this before, but in 2014 we went the other way from Chau Dock to Phnom Penh. We decided to repeat the route, and again we did not regret: crossing the river is not only convenient, but also spiritual.

You depart from an easily accessible pier in Phnom Penh and through Tonle Sap, Mekong, Keng Xiang and the How River you find yourself right in the center of Chau Dock.

The journey is leisurely, the landscapes change smoothly, and the companies that walk this route usually include an English-speaking guide in the cost - he will make sure that your passport and you are in the right place at the right time.

Short on the case - the most important thing

Visa-on-arrival cannot be used when entering Vietnam On the river - it operates only at international airports. To move to Phnom Penh → Chau Doc, you need an e-visa issued in advance.
The Vinh Xuong international land and river border gate, An Giang province.
Print 2 copies of the e-visa confirmation: one for border guards on entry, the second for leaving Vietnam.
Registration through the official website of the Vietnamese government - about 3 working days.
It is better to book boat tickets as early as possible: seats are limited, and operators will not allow without a valid visa.

How to buy tickets

There are now up to three different companies running along the river - the number of flights depends on the season and the water level. Tickets can be purchased at the company’s office in Phnom Penh or from a local travel agent. Usually paid in cash in US dollars; some offices accept cards, but it is better to have a stock of cash in case. Remember: when buying a ticket, make sure that you already have an e-visa ready – without it, boarding is usually impossible.

About border formalities and assistance of guides

The crossing includes border controls on the Cambodian and Vietnamese sides. Most companies have an assistant/guide who speaks English and helps with paperwork, which saves time and nerve cells.

If you like to dig deeper into the local history and life – a meeting with a local guide in Chau Dock will reveal the smells of floating markets, tell about rice plantations and thickets of mangrove forests around.

Practical advice and life hacks

Book your ticket as soon as you get your visa – boats are often sold out.
Print two copies of the e-visa and carefully store the second for departure.
Morning flights are calmer and give more light hours at Chau Dock.
Bring water, light snacks and sunscreen - it can be hot on deck.
Think of a local guide in Chau Dock: he will show floating markets, the Tra Su Nature Reserve and other hidden gems.
Get medical insurance for the duration of the trip and prepare adapters for sockets; it is convenient to use eSIM or a local SIM card for communication.

If you like the slow, slow way of crossing the border, I recommend this route in both directions. And to make the trip even brighter and clearer, consider walking with a local guide - they know how to turn a simple river crossing into a real adventure with history and delicious food.
