The Secret Waterfall Paradise of West Java (Indonesia): How to get there and what to see in Ciletuh Geopark
Ciletuh Geopark is a picturesque valley in the southwestern part of West Java Province, designated by UNESCO as a global geopark. Some of the best waterfalls in Indonesia are collected here, but most foreign tourists have not even heard of them. If you like waterfalls and hidden pearls, the road is worth it.
How to get there
The geopark is located in the southwest corner of West Java and is far from major cities: about 2.5 hours from Sukabumi, 4 hours from Jakarta and about 6 hours from Bandung. We were driving from Bandung and then headed to Jakarta.
The roads are mostly in good condition. You can hire a private driver on a van (we did it from Bandung), or you can get on a motorcycle - cheaper and more mobile, but you have to take into account the luggage and weather.
The Best Points and What to Watch
- Curug Puncak Manik
This is our first waterfall in the vicinity of Ciletuh and the one you will most likely see on your way to the geopark. Hiking takes 45-60 minutes in one direction with a steep descent; the path is made more comfortable, but you have to cross the stream (we went on the ankle-knee). This is a steam waterfall about 100 meters high. On the way, we met a rare hawk bird and a giant centipede. A local guy walked us out and helped with the photo - we left him a tip of 50,000 Indonesian rupees.
- Curug Awang.
Near Puncak Manik, not so high, but the water goes on a wide rock. To the observation deck - 5 minutes on foot, to the top - about 10 minutes, and to the foot - another 5-10 minutes. When we were there, the waterfall had already dried up; in the season of large waters, it must look much more impressive.
- Curug Tengah.
Access from the same parking lot as the Awang. It takes 10 minutes to inspect, but there is no path to the foot - the descent can take another half an hour. We stayed upstairs and took a shot from the drone - a great option if not ready for steep descents.
- Curug Cikaso.
Unique turquoise waterfall, which you need to drive about 1.5 hours from the main area of Ciletuh - but it is worth it. To the waterfall leads a light 10-minute stone path through the rice terraces. There is an option to get by boat on the creek, but we did not have to do this - for the boat we asked for an additional fee. The best time to shoot is the beginning of the dry season: the water is then pure and turquoise; in the middle of the rains it is often brown. The ideal lighting is early morning or late evening. You can swim; we saw little fish and crabs at the foot.
- Curug Cigangsa
A large waterfall surrounded by rice terraces. It is about an hour’s drive from the main part of Ciletuh. The places around are beautiful for walking and photos.
Useful advice
With a local guide you will see more: the locals know short trails, safe descent routes, give you the best angles and often show interesting facts about flora and fauna. This makes the walk richer and safer.
If you plan a photo from a drone, take spare batteries and check the rules and weather conditions.
In the dry season, waterfalls look different: somewhere the water is more beautiful, somewhere - scarcer. Plan a visit according to the desired effect (turquoise water, water pressure, etc.).
Transport: a private driver provides comfort and the ability to flexibly move to several points in one day; a motorcycle is more economical and convenient on narrow roads.
Ciletuh is a great place for those who like to explore hidden natural corners on their own. But a small local guide or guide will make the trip even more interesting and safer – especially if you want to take trails where there is no obvious marking. Have a good trip and bright photos!
