Sihanoukville – Kampot in 3-4 hours: the best transport and why you should take a local guide
We didn’t have much time in Sihanoukville – soon we were going further to Kampot.Cambodia. It is a cozy town on the Praek Tuek Chhu River, south of the Elephant Mountains and just 5 kilometers from the Gulf of Thailand.
Kampot is famous for its leisurely waterfront atmosphere, great places to relax, a magnificent national park - and, of course, the famous Campot pepper. Since the 13th century, this pepper has been grown in the vicinity of Kampot, and in 2010 it received the status of a protected appellation of origin (geographic indication).
If you love gastronomy, a trip to one of the local spice and herb plantations will be a real revelation - especially with a local guide who will explain the intricacies of collecting and processing.

The best way to get there.
In our experience, the best option is a minivan: fast, relatively comfortable and convenient. For booking, many use 12GoAsia, where you can see the boarding and disembarking areas before buying a ticket.
Transportation options: what to choose
Minivan: the most popular way. The distance on the road is 101 km, the journey is usually 3-4 hours. There are approximately 7 minivans/buses per day between Sihanoukville and Kampot. There are three companies in Sihanoukville that send minivans to Kampot; some, such as Champa Tourist Bus, offer transfers from certain hotels and hostels.
We stayed at Onederz in Sihanoukville, and our ticket included a lift directly from the hotel.
Sometimes you have to wait - some flights are synchronized with the arrival of boats from Koh Rong. If boarding is not included in the ticket, the addresses of offices and boarding areas can be viewed on the map or in the 12GoAsia system.
Private transfer: more expensive, but gives flexibility in time and comfort – convenient if you have a lot of luggage or want to stop on the way.
Train: It is possible to get by rail, but you need to plan the trip in advance - consider the way to the station in Sihanoukville.
Why You Should Take a Local Guide
Kampot is interesting not only for the embankment itself: pepper plantations, small fish sauce production fems, trails in the national park - with a guide you will see more, understand local traditions and get access to those places and people who alone do not always learn.
For independent travelers, this is a great way to combine freedom of movement and depth of experience.
