Turkish turquoise: 10 unforgettable experiences on the Turkish Riviera
Turkish turquoise coast The Turkish Riviera (Türk Rivierası) is a real find between the azure of the Mediterranean Sea and the harsh slopes of the Taurus Mountains. Stretching about 600 miles from Antalya to Bodrum, this region holds a rich history, vibrant culture and spectacular natural scenery - from ancient ruins and clean beaches to charming villages and bustling bazaars.
I lived in the vicinity of the Turkish Riviera for several years for six months and collected in this guide the best options so you can plan your own trip.
A local guide will make many of these experiences even deeper and brighter, revealing hidden locations, telling stories and saving time on logistics.
Towns and cities of the Turkish Riviera
antalya
The largest city in the region and the main entrance to the Riviera. Wander through the picturesque Old Town (Kaleiçi) with its narrow cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture and fragments of ancient city walls. Be sure to check out the Antalya Museum, one of the best collections of archaeological finds in the region. And for an impressive panorama of the coast, climb the cable car. A tour with a local guide will help connect museum exhibits with real historical places of the city.
Kaş
Laid-back and picturesque Kaş fascinates with houses, entwined with bougainvillea, small boutiques and coastal cafes. Dive masked into the clear water to discover underwater ruins and vibrant marine life, or take a boat trip to neighboring islands and secluded coves. Many routes along hidden coves are easier and more fun to follow with a local captain or guide who knows the best backwaters.
Fethiye
Cozy located in the bay, Fethiye is a lively city with impressive nature. Walk along the port, promenades and look at the ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff above the city. For independent travelers, maps and advice from an experienced guide are useful when visiting remote monuments.
Side
A city where history meets modernity: well-preserved Roman ruins, including the impressive Temple of Apollo and an ancient theater overlooking the sea. After exploring the antiquities, it is pleasant to get lost in cozy streets filled with shops and cafes. The guide will tell you what time it is best to come to the temple to catch the best photos and avoid crowds.
Alanya
The port, the ancient castle on the top of the hill and the active nightlife are a brief business card of Alanya. Visit Alanya Castle with its fortifications, relax on the sandy beaches and stroll along the busy coastal promenades and markets. A local guide will help plan an evening if you want to combine sightseeing with gastronomic discoveries.
Bodrum
Known for its evening entertainment, history and resort atmosphere, Bodrum is one of Turkey’s most attractive beach towns. Learn the traces of the ancient Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, explore the massive Bodrum Castle and enjoy a walk along the embankment. A tour with a local guide often includes interesting stories about the fate of these monuments and hidden museums.
Immersion in nature
Kayaking over the Sunken City near Kekova is a must for lovers of outdoor activities and history. Here you can glide on a kayak over ancient ruins, immersed in clear waters, and literally look into the past. This combination of physical activity and historical discovery gives great photos and sharp impressions: only the splash of an oar breaks the silence.
The easiest way is to join an organized tour from Kaş, which Nick and I did on our first visit. Such tours usually decide the delivery, rental of equipment and navigation on safe routes, and the guide or captain will tell stories about the sunken city – these are the details that make a good trip memorable.
