Vae Rebo (Flores): how to get to the mountain village-legends and spend the night in cone huts
Vae Rebo is a tiny traditional village in the mountains of Flores Island. IndonesiaIt is worth visiting at least once.
I recently visited there: the road takes effort, but the opportunity to spend the night in one of the cone huts, chat with the locals and enjoy the views is a unique experience. The people are very friendly, the scenery is impressive and the houses look great in the photos.
Briefly on logistics
The nearest major point is Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo islands. Due to the state of roads and distances, a full trip will take at least 2 days and 1 night.
The nearest airport is Komodo International Airport (LBJ code). The flight from Bali takes about 1 hour; there are also daily flights from Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

How to get there
(1) Transfer to Denge is the starting point of the track. From Labuan Baggio, the road takes about 4-5 hours due to poor roadways. Options:
rent a scooter (not recommended due to the state of the roads);
- hire a private driver and a car;
- go on an organized tour.
A private transfer from Labuan Baggio Airport to Vae Rebaud costs about 1-1.5 million rupees one way.
2) Trailhead from Dengue. The last stretch of the road is too narrow and steep for cars - you need to change to a moto taxi. The trip takes about 15 minutes; the road is slippery and dangerous, be sure to ask for a helmet.
About the village and the accommodation
Vae Rebo is a small community with traditional round houses. You can spend the night in the guesthouses-huts: it is an immersion in the local culture and the opportunity to meet the dawns in the mountains. With a local guide, the trip will only become richer: he will tell about customs, the history of the village, help organize the night and explain the intricacies of guest behavior.
Useful advice
If you do not have time for a long road trip in Flores, it is easier to choose an organized 2-day tour: usually there is a transfer from Labuan Baggio, fees, meals and an English-speaking guide.
- Nearby you can combine the visit with a one and a half-day stop on the island of Nuca Molas (Nuca Molas) - a beautiful place, near Vae Rebo.
- Take comfortable track shoes, a raincoat, cash for local fees and a moto taxi, as well as a camera - the views are fantastic.
Ask the taxi driver for a helmet and do not take risks in bad weather.
Vae Rebo is worth the effort: if you want not just to “mark”, but to understand the language of local traditions and see their way of life – think about the local guide. This will make the trip safer and more interesting.
