How to Enjoy Travel – The 5 Minute Rule
You travel and find that many cities are full of tourists. And it's impossible to travel there!
It's true. There are many destinations in the world where there are many tourists / travelers. So, if you prefer to stay away from mass tourism, finding the perfect place to visit can seem like a real challenge.
Almost 90% of travelers visit the same places, eat in the same restaurants in the same main squares, walk the same streets and wander around the same shops around the world. Think about it...
There is nothing wrong with visiting the main attractions or the most interesting areas, as well as eating the famous pastries from the famous bakery.
But if you want to have an unforgettable travel experience, all you really need to do is follow one very simple rule.
The 5 Minutes Rule for Local Travel
Here's how it works:
Step 1: Turn around.
Step 2: Get out.
For example, Moscow. St. Petersburg. Kazan... with thousands of tourists at each attraction...
OrRome. Istanbul or Lisbon These cities are absolutely packed with tourists, travelers, cruise passengers and foreigners of all stripes. In all the “known” places there are queues and crowds, and there are a lot of “famous” places!
If you don’t like visiting tourist destinations, you may feel the urge to escape within minutes of arriving.
At the same time...
By our rule, all we do is turn around and leave.
When we look for a place to eat, we look for areas located within a 5-minute walk of areas full of tourist-oriented restaurants.
When we feel like drinking coffee, we turn from the famous square, dotted with cafes serving poor quality food and drinks, to the endless stream of travelers ... and leave. We walk down a random street and climb a random staircase.
When we want to explore the city, we head to the areas that are most popular with tourists, then choose a destination and start leaving. Sometimes we go back and do it again in a different direction.
Using this simple method, we get the impression of local travel that we enjoy.
We find ourselves in cozy local restaurants in quiet alleys. All customers will be local, prices will be many times lower than in nearby tourist restaurants... and the food is usually much better!
We also find ourselves in cool places that few people know about, such as a wonderful bookbinder, a local establishment with incredible views that quickly became our favorite cafe in the city, and an attractive but non-tourist beach.
We get an idea of real life. Moscow. St. Petersburgah Kazan: in quaint parks, in secluded squares where daily life boils, in shops where fruits and pastries are of the highest quality at the lowest prices, and in beautiful neighborhoods where there are no known attractions that attract the crowd.
It's authentic. It's extremely useful. And it's incredibly fun.
The real beauty of all of this is that we don’t have to head to the far reaches of the city (which would also be great!) to make it happen. All we do is walk five minutes away from the crowds.
It's so simple. Local travel is always available...anytime, at any destination around the world.
