Carnival 2015 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Recently, Tenerife ended the brightest and most beloved holiday - the annual carnival. The celebration of 2015 brought a huge number of guests to the island who want to see with their own eyes the incredible costumes of the participants and take part in mass festivities.

The annual carnival, which is second only to the world-famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro, is as integral an attribute of Santa Cruz de Tenerife as the picturesque beaches and warm sun. However, this tradition originates far from here. It was brought to the island by the Spanish in the 18th century from Europe, where the custom of holding carnivals was associated with the beginning of Lent, during which it was forbidden to eat any meat dishes. The modern holiday is also directly related to the church calendar, so the start date of the celebration changes every year.

Every year, a huge number of tourists come to the island of Tenerife to immerse themselves in unrestrained fun and merge with a motley crowd of participants for two weeks. However, do not think that carnival is a chaotic mass festivities. The holiday has a pre-selected theme, based on which, participants create costumes, scripts of competitions, lyrics of songs and chalets. The theme of Carnival 2015, which took place on the island from 11 to 22 February, was “The Future”. We will discuss the most important events of 2015 below.

On Wednesday, February 11, a beauty contest (Election of the Queen or Gala de Eleccion de la Reina) was held. The participants of the show had to conquer the jury members not only with external data, but also with their own talents. Tickets for the contest were sold out instantly, and those who could not get into the hall had the opportunity to watch the competition live on the local channel.

On Friday, February 13, the first procession (Cabalgata Anunciadora) took place, which became the official opening of the festival. A motley crowd marched through the streets of the city. After the demonstration, mass festivities continued until late at night.

On Tuesday, February 17, the main procession (Gran Coso Apoteosis) took place. Dressed in festive costumes, contestants and songwriters marched through the streets of Tenerife. As in previous years, this day in Tenerife gathered the maximum number of tourists.

On Wednesday, February 18, the festival closed. His main work was the funeral of the sardines (Entierro de la Sardina). Participants of the festival carried through the streets of the city a huge cardboard model of sardines, which was later burned in the main square. The festival ended with colorful fireworks.

The carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2015, like all the holidays of the past years, was distinguished by brightness and originality, which allowed to give all the guests who came to the holiday a lot of pleasant impressions.
