New "highlights" of Kronstadt
A small city near St. Petersburg – Kronstadt – is rightly called the city of naval glory of Russia. It has long been a center of advanced science and industry. There is something to see interested in the history of the native country, its fleet, science and culture. But Kronstadt until the 90s of the last century was closed to the public: it is one of the bases of the Russian Navy.
With the opening of Kronstadt for the public, it has become one of the tourist centers of St. Petersburg, its attractiveness for tourists is growing. The themes of the excursion narrative are deep and serious, they arouse interest and pride in their country.
But... a person is so arranged that in the most serious he needs a little distraction, a “highlight”. Especially it is necessary for a tourist, after all, "resting".
In Kronstadt in recent years, there have been many such “highlights” in the form of a new urban sculpture, often very filled with meaningful meaning.
Let’s start with the Symbolic Pot, or boiler.
Kronstadt is located on the island of Kotlin in the middle of the Gulf of Finland. Kotlin is a pot... There is a legend that when Russian troops unexpectedly invaded this island, the Swedes fled in panic, overturning the boiler heated at the stake. Here is a reason to talk about the name of the city, and take a picture, of course, at this pot.Kronstadt made an invaluable contribution to the defense of Leningrad during the blockade. Don't be Kronstadt, his heroes. About the feat of Kronstadtsev tell many monuments and memorial plaques of the city. Here lived the legendary Alexander Marinesco!
And in a completely unexpected way, the theme of war and blockade reinforces the new “Monument to the Sticklefish”. After all, this small fish supported the starving defenders of Kronstadt and Leningrad.
It is noteworthy that Kronshadt was the birthplace of many scientific and technical inventions, discoveries and innovations. We can say that the whole tour of Kronstadt is permeated with this theme. And one of these technical innovations in its time was water supply.Water supply in Kronstadt appeared much earlier than in St. Petersburg, in 1804. In 1838, the building of a water-lifting machine was erected, the new water pipeline came into operation. Just a few years ago, a museum was opened in this building - the Museum of the History of the City of Kronstadt. And next to the museum there is a new city sculpture (it is also a fountain): “Monument to the water carrier”
Tourists, as you know, like to make wishes: throw coins to return to the place they like, rub outstanding parts of monuments to shine to make the dream come true. In Kronstadt, for the realization of such aspirations, a special object was created – the “Wish Tree”. It graced the city for its 300th anniversary (2004). Since then, groups of strangely behaving tourists have swirled around the sculpture: who jumps around the tree on one leg, who whispers his secret into the iron ear, who puts a note into the hollow, who throws a coin. They're taking pictures, of course. Fun...
In conclusion, I will say that there is much more noteworthy news in Kronstadt: this is the reconstruction of the Sea Cathedral, and the recent opening of the Museum and Monument of John of Kronstadt, and the sculpture of the city appeared much more. In a brief review, I mentioned only those curious “highlights” that do not bypass any excursion route.
