Lost or forgotten your passport? How to stay in a hotel: tips for tourists
When a tourist arrives at the hotel, the administration asks for an identity document. However, not all documents are suitable for this purpose. For example, a foreign passport used abroad is not suitable for settling in Russia.
A Russian passport is required to stay in a hotel in Russia. A passport, although it confirms your identity abroad, is not suitable for identification within the country, as it lacks some of the information required to do so. However, there is an exception: if you permanently reside abroad and your passport is issued by a Russian consulate in another country, it can be accepted for settlement.
Identification at a hotel is not just a formality. It helps prevent possible offenses and ensures the safety of both guests and the hotel itself.
If a tourist has forgotten or lost his passport before checking in, he has several options. First, some hotels may offer alternative ways of settling, for example, through biometrics, if the traveler’s data is already registered in the Unified Biometric System.
Secondly, you can contact the nearest office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for a temporary identity card. It will take some time, but it is a legitimate way to solve the problem. Third, if possible, you can ask relatives or friends to bring your passport or temporary ID.
Often there is a situation when a woman marries, changes her surname and immediately submits for a new passport, as a result of which she cannot present either the old or the new. If a traveler has recently married and changed her name, but has not yet received a new passport, she should not rush to change it before traveling. She can check in with her old passport, as it remains valid for 90 days after changing her name.
To settle children under 14 years of age, it is necessary to present a birth certificate, and upon reaching this age - a child's passport. If the child is traveling not with his parents, but, for example, with his grandmother, notarial consent from the parents will be required.
Always bring your passport with you, especially if you plan to stay in a hotel. It is also recommended to have a driver's license or medical policy with you - these can come in handy in some situations.
Save electronic copies of documents in the cloud or in the Public Services app. And book a hotel in advance, keeping the booking confirmation - this will simplify the check-in process and provide you with comfortable accommodation.
