Traveling with Pets: Guide and Tips for Owners

According to the Russian Union of Travel Industry, Russians are increasingly taking their pets with them on trips.

Traveling with dogs and cats has many advantages. First, it is an opportunity to spend time with your pet and avoid separation, which reduces stress for both owners and animals. Secondly, having a pet can make it easier to communicate with other people and make the trip more intense and interesting.

How to prepare your pet for the journey?

  • Start with short trips over short distances so your pet gets used to the road and understands that traveling is safe and fun.
  • If your pet is prone to anxiety or anxiety, consult your veterinarian in advance. The veterinarian may prescribe sedatives, which are usually taken long before the trip to achieve a cumulative effect.
  • Instruct your pet to carry or slake a few weeks before the trip, so that he gets used to them and does not experience discomfort during the trip.
  • Make sure you have all the necessary documents and essentials: a veterinary passport, a bowl for water and food, favorite toys and medicines, if any.

Documents for travel with pets

In Russia by plane

The first and most important document for your pet is a veterinary passport. It contains the name of the owner and the animal, as well as the veterinarian's marks on rabies vaccination and deworming. These procedures are mandatory for the admission of the pet on board.

The second important document is the veterinary certificate form No. 1. It should be issued no earlier than 5 days before the trip. To do this, call the state station for the control of animal diseases, specify the necessary requirements and visit the institution.

In Russia by train

Document requirements are less stringent on trains. A guide can let you through with your pet even without a veterinary passport and vaccination.

From January 1, 2025, it is possible to transport small pets in carriers in luxury compartment cars without the need to redeem the entire compartment, if the service class allows it.

At the same time, for each pet you need to get a ticket at the ticket office of Russian Railways: it will be free if you buy the entire compartment, and paid in other cases. The ticket must remain throughout the trip.

Long-distance trains allow the transportation of dogs, cats, birds and other small animals, but not more than two per ticket. Animals take the place of hand luggage, but do not reduce its limit.

The rules and the possibility of transporting animals are established by the carrier.

Your pet will need a carrier that:
the sum of three dimensions (length, height and width) does not exceed 180 cm;
- well ventilated;
Has a bottom that does not pass water;
Closed so that the animal cannot escape.
It is spacious enough that the pet can lie down, stand up, move and turn.

The carrier can also be a box, basket, cage or container. Throughout the trip, the animal should remain in the carrier.

In Russia by car.

When traveling by private car, you can also transport a pet without a passport and vaccinations.

Abroad by plane

If you are planning to travel abroad, you will need a chipping certificate – this is an addition to your veterinary passport and Form 1 certificate.

Chipping can be done in any convenient clinic, not necessarily the state.

Eurocertificate is required for those who fly to the Schengen countries. You will receive this document at the airport from Rosselkhoznadzor employees before passing customs.

Veterinary certificate of the Customs Union form No. 1 is required for those who travel with a pet to Belarus, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Armenia. Like a veterinary certificate, this certificate is issued at the state animal disease control station not earlier than 5 days before the trip.

For a comfortable trip, insure not only yourself, but also your pet. The insurance policy is valid for a year and will cover the cost of visiting the veterinary clinic. Standard insurance cases include diagnostic studies, operations for animal injury, as well as telemedicine.

You can add a tick bite option to your insurance, especially from April to October if you plan outdoor activities. Remember that each insurance company has its own individual conditions, so read the contract carefully or consult a lawyer before buying.

Usually, insurance companies set limits on the age of pets. The maximum age to which an animal can be insured is usually 8 years. The minimum age for insurance is usually 2 months.

How to calm your pet before traveling?

If your pet is nervous during the trip, try the following ways to calm him down:

  • Soothe your voice and communicate with your pet affectionately and calmingly.
  • Bring your favorite toys and things with familiar smells to help your pet feel more comfortable.
  • Make stops while traveling to take a walk with your dog or give your cat a chance to run a little.
  • If the nervousness of the pet is very strong, consult a veterinarian for the appointment of a sedative.

It is important to remember that each pet is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Experiment with different ways to find the one that best soothes your pet during the trip.

What places are forbidden to visit with pets:

  • Botanical gardens
  • Museums
  • Historic sites and attractions
  • Restaurants and cafes that do not have a special policy allowing entry with animals
  • But many catering establishments, such as cafes and restaurants, are friendly to visitors with pets. It is common to see special dog stickers or "dog friendly" or "pet friendly" labels on the doors of establishments, indicating that animals are welcome there.

It is always better to clarify the policy of the establishment with regard to pet visitors in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises.
