The Kremlin (Child) novgorod

The Kremlin was first mentioned in the annals in 1044, it was founded by Prince Vladimir, the son of Yaroslav the Wise on the left bank of the Volkhov River, and was first a wooden building. After the fire, the Kremlin was rebuilt almost anew and made of stone.

Why is the Kremlin of Veliky Novgorod called detinets? There is no consensus on this, there are four official versions. The name comes from the word “children”, because it was in the walls of the fortress that children were hidden from danger. According to another version, the name came from the vigilantes, bearing the name of children or youths, who, according to researchers, lived inside the fortress. Another version suggests that Detinetsem built thanks to the elders who lived in it. The next version echoes the first, according to her, the word “baby” came from the verb “child” with the meaning of hiding, because inside the walls of the Kremlin sheltered women and children in dangerous times. The word Kremlin took root with the construction in the XIV century.

Initially, the Kremlin served as a defensive structure in Russia and was built according to all the principles of such fortresses: it was located near the river at an elevation from it, having a good view and inaccessible to the enemy.

Detinets previously had 12 towers, of which only 9 remain today: Spasskaya, Palace, Prince, Kosuy (Kalancha), Pokrovskaya, Zlatoust, Metropolitan, Vladimir and Fedorovskaya. All of them differ in parameters, as all had their purpose.

Hagia Sophia Cathedral novgorod

“Where St. Sophia is, there is Novgorod,” they say in Russia for a thousand years. Since then, when in the XI century, the grandiose Cathedral of Sophia of the Wisdom of God was built. Today it is the oldest of the stone buildings of Russia.

The temple was founded by Yaroslav the Wise and his son Vladimir and was built from 1045 to 1050. The Novgorodians themselves at all times treated the cathedral with the greatest reverence. It was built without a doubt by very talented masters who were able to convey in stone the features of the Novgorod character: restraint, severity and grandeur of thoughts.

St. Sophia Cathedral Veliky Novgorod is the most important Orthodox church of the city and the spiritual center. The cross of the main dome is crowned by the image of the Holy Spirit - a sculpture of a dove. Tradition says that during the bloody massacres of Tsar Ivan IV over the citizens, people on the cross noticed a dove, which froze in horror from what he saw. It is believed that the bird is designed specifically for the city, and as long as it is in the same place, Novgorod will be protected.

Monument "Millennium of Russia" novgorod

In 1862, the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Russia was to be celebrated, this event was decided to be immortalized by the installation of a monument. Novgorod was chosen to install the monument, recognizing its key role in the creation of the Russian state.

The idea belonged to Alexander II, and the ceremony took place on September 8, 1862. At the opening of the monument “Millennium of Russia” was attended by the Emperor and the heir and members of the Imperial House. Novgorod became the capital of Russia and the center of its political life. “Monument to the Millennium of Russian Statehood” is the first work of Mikhail Mikeshin, at that time a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts who was not yet known to anyone.

The monument is interesting because it was established not for a specific person or event, but for a whole millennium of the history of a large state. In total, the building consists of 128 figures, located on three tiers, symbolizing “Orthodoxy, autocracy, nationality”. The upper tier of "Orthodoxy" consists of a kneeling female figure - a symbol of Russia and the angel blessing her with a cross.

The middle tier symbolizes the six eras of the state. The 17 figures set on this tier are divided into groups, each aimed at a different part of the world, as an indicator of the role played by a particular ruler in strengthening the boundaries. Among them are the first Russian Prince Rurik, Vladimir the Baptist, Dmitry Donskoy, Ivan III, Mikhail Romanov, Peter I.

On the tier of the foundation there are 109 prominent figures of Russian history, who are united in four groups: 31 educators (among them - Kirill and Methodius, Sergius of Radonezh), 26 statesmen (among them Yaroslav the Wise, Catherine II), 36 military (among them Mikhail Kutuzov, Bogdan Khmelnitsky) and 16 writers and artists (among them Pushkin, Lomonosov).

Rurikovo Gorodice

Rurikovo settlement is considered the oldest residence of the rulers of Russia. The fortified settlement originates in the Viking era in the source of the Volkhov on the ancient trade routes: Baltic-Volga and "from the Varangians to the Greeks". Rurik was founded here after calling him to rule in 862. Excavations of fortifications, residential and economic complexes of the IX-X centuries confirm that the Rurikovo settlement is the “Old City” in relation to Novgorod, which arose in the era of Christianization (vol.

The chronicles tell that in 946-947 it was here that Princess Olga came, who pursued a policy of centralization of Russian lands after the death of Igor’s husband, the Kiev prince.

Today Rurikovo settlement is the majestic ruins of the Annunciation Cathedral, erected by Prince Mstislav the Great in 1103 and rebuilt in the XIV century. Remaining a princely residence until the reign of Ivan the Terrible (XVI century), the Gorodishche was the center of the most important events in the political history of Novgorod. The Annunciation Church and the Yuriev Monastery ensemble located on the opposite bank looked like a majestic gate on the waterway to Novgorod.

The monastery was founded by Novgorod Prince Yaroslav the Wise at the beginning of the XI century. During the baptism, Yaroslav received the name George, which in Russian sounded like "Yuri", it is this name and is easy to base the name of the monastery. Mention of the monastery in the chronicles begins in 1119. At that time he was called Lavra and considered the first in importance among the inhabitants of Novgorod. In the XV century he became the largest and richest church feudal lord.

The monastery is located 4 kilometers from Veliky Novgorod on the shores of Lake Ilmen and is currently an operating male monastery and consists of a whole complex of temples: St. George, Krestovozhdvizhensky, Spassky, Bell Tower, the Church of Archangel Michael and the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Non-burning Kupin”. St. George's Cathedral is a unique architectural monument of the XII century, which is a princely tomb. The mother and elder brother of Alexander Nevsky are buried here.

Church of the Transfiguration in Veliky Novgorod

The pearl of architecture of Veliky Novgorod is the Church of the Transfiguration. It was built in 1374 and fascinated with a variety of decorative motifs and slender proportions.

It is noteworthy that the temple is the only preserved in the world of all the churches painted by the great Byzantine master Theophanes the Greek, and there were about 40 of them.

For the Byzantine artist was characterized by an expressive and expressive style of writing. The icons of the Greek did not differ in the elaboration of details and variety of colors, however, made a strong impression on the viewer. White glare reflected divine light, and earthly beauty was the creation of the Higher Forces. That is why the Church is considered the most important monument of culture, which is definitely worth visiting and feeling the strongest energy of the place itself and the creative work of Theophanes the Greek, revolutionary for his time.

Banner Cathedral

The cathedral was built in 1688 on the site of the ancient Church of the Sign, built for the icon “The Sign of the Most Holy Mother of God”. Tradition says that the icon protected Novgorod from the superior number of Suzdal people in 1170, and is now revered as one of the main shrines of the city. Now it is located in the Sophia Cathedral, next to the altar.

Znamensky Cathedral is a typical monument of Russian architecture of the XVII century, its facades are decorated with fresco paintings and tiled inserts. The interior painting was made by Kostroma masters in 1702, it is perfectly preserved. Among the figures of the huge composition “The Last Judgment”, occupying the entire western wall, there is an image of a man in a short “German” dress and shoes, whose facial features surprisingly resemble the Russian Tsar Peter I.

Paraskeva Friday ChurchThirteenth century.

The temple got its name in honor of the patroness of the Novgorod merchant Proskeva-Friday. In addition, the auction in Novgorod opened on Friday. It is believed that on this site the first church was founded in 1156 by “overseas merchants”, so called merchants who were engaged in trade abroad.

The building is a cross-shaped building with six pillars, four of which have a round shape, which is quite atypical for Novgorod architecture of the time of its construction.

Several beliefs are associated with the Paraskeva Church, which will interest lovers of wish-fulfillers: if a girl kisses around the church three times, she will soon get married, and it is worth going around the church and counting all the corners correctly, then a wish will come true, good luck.
