Father's Day in Australia

Description:

Father’s Day was celebrated only in the 20th century.
Father’s Day began to be celebrated only in the 20th century – in parallel with Mother’s Day. The main motive of the day is to emphasize the role of the father in the upbringing of the child and in the formation of a new personality.

There are many theories about the appearance of this holiday. The most common idea of the celebration belongs to the American Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised six children alone.

The holiday, according to Mrs. Dodd, was supposed to be a dedication to all fathers. That's what happened. However, instead of June 5 (the day of the death of the father of the enthusiast), the official date of celebration was approved the third Sunday of June. Today, Father’s Day is a good tradition in most countries.

In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. Australians celebrate Father’s Day not in June, like most Commonwealth countries, but on the first Sunday of September.

But the events themselves on this day are similar to those that take place around the world. Using an additional holiday opportunity, people thank their fathers for their care and support. Most often, children give flowers, chocolate and self-drawn cards to their dear fathers, grandfathers, uncles and all the important men in their lives. The most popular gift on this day is a tie.

Although Father’s Day is mainly a “home” holiday, some clubs and community initiatives in the country organize special entertainment programs. Family meetings at breakfast are a common tradition in Australia to celebrate Father’s Day. Numerous active games, hiking and other activities are also popular on this day, allowing to further strengthen the (already strong) bond between fathers and children.
