Mount Wellington

Wellington Park TAS 7054, Australia

Description:

Mount Wellington is a great holiday destination for active travelers. Numerous hiking trails and bike paths are laid along its slopes, and whoever can climb to the top will be rewarded with a beautiful view of Hobart.

The mountain rises above the valley of the Derwent River for 1270 meters. Its top often flaunts in a snowdress, sometimes even in the summer. You can get here on a 22-kilometer highway encircling the mountain. The highway was built in 1937 as part of the struggle against unemployment, thus giving jobs to the local population. The mountain gained its present name in 1822, when it was decided to perpetuate the memory of Arthur Wellington, who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. In one of his works, Charles Darwin described his ascent to this mountain and the unique plants he discovered there.

Today, Mount Wellington is equipped with multiple picnic areas. There are no cafes and fast food, shops and attractions. Here come those who want to be alone with nature, enjoy the silence, peace and singing of birds, admire the magnificent basalt protrusions, which are called “Organ trumpets”, and if lucky, see from the top of the National Park, located almost 100 kilometers to the west. But be prepared for the fact that standing on the top, you will not even see your own shoes - strong fogs are not uncommon here. Usually 8-10 degrees colder here than in Hobart, so warm clothes will not be superfluous.
