Parkes Pl, Canberra ACT 2600, Australia
Description:
The National Library of Australia was established in 1960. It's located in Canberra. The library has 5 million books in different languages. More than 130,000 books have been digitally translated. In addition to books, in the library you can find periodicals, manuscripts from all over the world.
It also contains documents related to the history of the country, a collection of rare books dedicated to other countries from different continents. Every week there are guided tours to the backstage of the library.
The building itself was built in a style similar to Greek temples and opened in 1968. The history of this institution dates back to 1901. The library was originally located in Melbourne and moved to Canberra in 1927. As noted above, it has been an independent institution since 1960.
Some of the books for the National Library of Australia were donated by volunteers. Captain Cook's journal, as well as Wills' diary relating to the expedition of Robert Burke, are the most valuable exhibits of the institution.
